Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, living by yourself can sometimes get lonely. Especially in the last year, many people who live alone have found out just how isolating this experience can be if you’re not able to physically be with other people for extended periods of time.
For some, it’s made sense to change their situation in one way or another, whether this means moving into an assisted living facility or getting a roommate. But for those who still find themselves on their own, here are three tips for making living along not so lonely.
Make Your Home Your Dream Space
If you’re living in a space all by yourself, you might as well turn the entire area into your dream home.
According to Dr. Timothy J. Legg, a contributor to Healthline.com, creating a space that you love being in and that you’re completely comfortable in can help you feel more relaxed at home and feel like you’re surrounded by the things that you love. Even if you can’t afford to spend a lot of money creating a space that has all the lush furnishing that you might dream of, you can still find used or secondhand items that can help you make your space a little more personalized to you. The less cold and formulaic the space feels to you, the less lonely you’ll feel when you’re in it.
Find Ways To Connect With Others
Just because no one else is living in the home with you doesn’t mean that you can’t spend a big portion of your time at home connecting with those that you love and care for.
Lisa Walden, a contributor to Country Living, shares that apart from calling people on the phone or video chatting them, you can also try things like playing virtual games with one another, sending care packages or other mail to each other, or staying in touch via social media. All of these things can help you to find and strengthen your connection with others, which is what a lot of people living alone really want in order to feel less lonely.
Consider A Pet Or Plants
While you might not have another person living with you, that doesn’t mean that you have to live completely by yourself.
One great way you can stave off the loneliness that comes from living by yourself is by getting a pet or a plant to share your home with. According to Adrienne Breaux, a contributor to Apartment Therapy, pets and plants can both give you a sense of companionship because you have something to take care of and something living to occupy some space in your home and in your life.
If you’ve been a little lonely living by yourself, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you feel a little less lonely from now on.
